48 Hours in Banaras: Every Chaat Stop Worth Queuing For

I arrived in Banaras on a Tuesday morning with a list of 14 chaat vendors and two days to eat through them. By Wednesday evening, I had visited 11 — and revised my top five three times.

Banaras chaat is not Delhi chaat. It's sharper, less sweet, more pungent. The tamarind chutney has a fermented depth that Delhi's doesn't. The yoghurt is thicker. The masala is applied with more aggression. If you arrive expecting the chaat you know, you'll be surprised — in the best possible way.

Kashi Chaat Bhandar — The Original

This is the one everyone talks about, and it deserves the reputation. Located on Dashashwamedh Ghat Road, it opens at 7 AM and regularly sells out by 11. Arrive before 9 AM if you want the full menu.

Deena Chaat Bhandar — The Backup

When Kashi is sold out — and it will be — Deena's at Godaulia Crossing is your next move. Less famous, slightly more affordable, and open until 9 PM. Their tamatar chaat is actually better than Kashi's version.

Pro Tips for Banaras Chaat

  • 1Go early — the best vendors sell out before noon.
  • 2Ask for "extra tamarind" (imli zyada) — it's the soul of Banaras chaat.
  • 3Skip the vendors near Manikarnika Ghat — they're tourist traps.
  • 4Carry cash in small denominations. Most vendors don't accept UPI.
  • 5The morning chaat has freshest papdi — afternoon versions can be soggy.
